2000 CHARDONNAY

back

Complexity and texture are hallmarks of the Cullen Chardonnay. The fruit for this wine is harvested at varying degrees throughout vintage to contribute a range of flavours.

The wine is fermented with natural yeasts and maturated in French oak for seven to ten months.  In order to preserve flavour and texture the wine has, if any at all, a light fining and filtration just prior to bottling.

Cullen Chardonnay will cellar well for up to ten years.

Tasting notes   Reviews

This is one of the greatest Chardonnays yet produced at Cullen Wines. It was held back for a year before release so that all of its many components could come together.

The fruit for this wine was picked at optimal ripeness and was fermented in new French oak, employing wild yeast. The wine was subjected to minimal filtration and remained in oak for nine months with monthly lees stirring.

Colour: Deep straw with green/gold tinges
Bouquet: Complex blend of well integrated citrus lime, pawpaw and vanillan oak aromas
Palate: The quince and lemon fruit flavours, which fill the whole palate, are rich and very attractive and backed by just the right amount of good clean oak. The palate is beautifully long and persistent
Cellaring: Now to 2010
Food: All types of seafood, pasta, chicken and veal

ONWINE Report April 2002
by Jeremy Oliver

Opulent, heady aromas of ripe melon and citrus are backed by smoky, buttery and vanilla oak with creamy lees influences. It's fractionally spirity, but there's a luxuriant, smooth texture of rare impact and power that somehow conveys an impression of tightness and elegance. Finishing long, mineral and savoury, it will develop wonderfully in the bottle.
