2006 "MANGAN VINEYARD" SAUVIGNON BLANC SEMILLON

back

The Mangan vineyard, which is owned and managed by Rick Cullen with supervision by Cullen Wines, is located just over the road from the Cullen Estate vineyards. Although this vineyard thus has a very similar terroir to its close neighbour, its Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon have their own very distinctive characteristics.

We were so impressed with the individuality and quality of the fruit produced by these two great white grape varieties on the Mangan vineyard in 2006 that we decided to make a wine solely from that fruit. The quality of this wine reflects the fact that the vines are now eleven years old, dry farmed and maintained using a biodynamic approach to viticulture, the last of which also encourages the vines to express the individuality of that vineyard. Our confidence in this wine is demonstrated by our decision to bottle it under our premium label.

This wine represents a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon, with the yields for these varieties being 2.3 and 2.7 tons per acre, respectively. Thirty percent of the wine was fermented using wild yeasts, with 15% of the Sauvignon Blanc being fermented in new French oak in which it remained for three months. The alcohol content is only 12.7%.

Colour: Brilliant pale straw.
Bouquet: Vibrant blend of intense citric lemon, grapefruit, honeysuckle and floral aromas.
Palate: Intense, fresh and fine lemon fruit flavours are perfectly balanced by the delightfully crisp, long and persistent acid finish.
Cellaring: Delicious current drinking, but will develop for several years with good cellaring.
Food: Excellent as an aperitif and perfect accompaniment for asparagus oysters, crustaceans and fish.
