2016 Kevin John scores 98 points with Decanter

It’s difficult not to use the word ‘pioneer’ about Cullen Wines; founder Dr Kevin Cullen and his wife Diana trace their links with wine in the area as far back as 1880. The Cullens’ first vines were planted in 1971 and today the winery is run by their daughter Vanya. This flagship wine is made from vines planted in 1976 and farmed biodynamically. Sarah Ahmed: Sweet icing sugar lift to nose and palate, with crisp green apple and grapefruit tension. Smoky grapefruit oil gives a subtle roundness to the palate. Super-linear and focused with a bubbling mineral water finish. Roger Jones: Juicy, so juicy on the palate, but in a restrained manner. Seamless purity is queen here, with very gentle stone fruit that’s not overripe. This is focused, very clever and pretty perfect. Anthony Rose: Sweet peach, spicy oak and a touch of exotic mango promise on the palate, which is fine-textured, rich and intense. A rather lovely, classic, expressive Chardonnay.
