Garden Update May 2015

What is happening in the garden…

photo 8Multispecies cover crops of grains and legumes have been seeded through the vineyard adding more biodiversity to existing seed bank. The rain and full moon make for perfect conditions to get them bursting out of the earth. Broad beans are to be sown on a carpet of clover around the restaurant vines providing nutritious leaves, flowers and fruit for the restaurant.

Our olive tree and pomegranate will be harvested and processed in the kitchen. Garlic and onions which have been hanging in the shed have begun to shoot and will be divided and planted in the soil.

Our homestead vegetable patch is getting cleaned out and planted with cover crops to prepare the soil for a fruit orchard with an undergrowth of vegetables. Micro herbs, sunflower and radish sprouts are being seeded in the greenhouse in trays providing high value nutrition to our already nutrient dense pallet of fresh salad and vegetables

Earthly forces are stronger at this time of year as the etheric rays radiate down into the soil bringing in the calcium and alkaline spectrum. Cow pat pit or Barrel preparation will be prepared by mixing 50kg of cow manure, 500g of basalt dust and 200g crushed egg shell for 1 hour then placed underground in a half buried wine barrel and Biodynamic preparations added, this will be mature in 3-4months and ready for soil and foliar applications. Effective microorganisms are being harvested and bred up in molasses solution to be used as another tool to increase bacterial and fungal activity in our soils.

It is a good time to apply horn manure, make compost, transplant seedlings, pruning, wine racking and harvesting for storage from the 16th-22nd of May. This is a descending or waning period and is influenced by the earth and water signs.  From the 1st-9th and the 25th-31st of May it will be a good time to apply horn silica, plant seeds, graft and harvest for early consumption. This is an ascending or waxing period and is influenced by air or fire signs.

WE ARE CURRENTLY HARVESTING…  Aubergine, capsicum, kohl rabi, rocket, beetroot, jerusalem artichoke, swiss chard, salad greens,  radish, spring onion, herbs, edible flowers.

If anyone has any queries in regards to the garden, please feel welcome to ask… Cheers, Jaimie
