Garden Update September 2017

Garden Update September 2017

What is happening in the garden…

Spring has arrived as the almond blossom drop the last of their snow white petals. Jonquils, daffodils and Geraldton wax begin their flower show, allowing the bee’s some more variety of nectar and pollen as they begin to make a new season batch of delicious honey. Cover crops are in full flower and the mulching has begun returning the organic material to the soils.

Grapefruit, lemon and limes are being harvested with new growth tips and the scent of new blossom filling the air. Calendula, society garlic, radish, salvia and pea flowers are adding floral flavour to our dishes and carrot, radish and turnip filling the root and earth component. Salad crops are beginning to bolt with spring plantings thickly seeded to get through this time. Broad beans have an abundance of flowers and their fruit has begun to set.

Plenty of digging in the vegetable gardens with fresh compost and mineral dust being applied to beds which will be planted out with summer crops of tomatoes, capsicum, aubergine, beans and zucchini.

WE ARE CURRENTLY HARVESTING…

Lemons, beetroot, turnips, radish, radicchio, chard, kale, water cress, spring onion, salad leaf, herbs, edible flowers, horse radish.

If anyone has any queries in regards to the garden, please feel welcome to ask…  Cheers, Jaimie
