2020 Legacy Series Fruit Day Kevin John Chardonnay

The 2020 Legacy Series Kevin John Chardonnay was the last pre-covid vintage.
Harvested on a fruit day, the 3rd February 2020, the fruit was whole bunch basket pressed and fermented in a 675 litre concrete egg before ageing in a new puncheon for 6 months. Another special batch of artisanal wine chosen from the 2020 vintage.

Vintage Notes

2020 vintage was defined by dry conditions from the onset of budburst through to harvest in 2020.
A lower than average rainfall in 2019, and hot dry weather conditions in January, February and March made for almost drought conditions for harvest 2020.

Bunch numbers were about average, but low berry weights due to the dry conditions produced very low yields and wines which were balanced and pretty in nature. The harvest was unaffected by Covid 19 lockdowns as we had finished harvest and most of the fermentations had also finished, we just had the pressing of the red wines. Chardonnay yields were still affected by the previous year’s frost.

Wines of excellent balance and fruit purity, a vintage similar to 2003 in style.
Best varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

OAK: 100% in a new puncheon for 6 months

Tasting Notes

Colour: Light golden Cellar: Enjoy now or for up to 20 years Bouquet: Enlivened citrus, honeysuckle, ginger, dried pear, grapefruit. Food: Prawns, Tasmanian ocean trout, crayfish. Palate: Long, soft and silky with beautiful texture balance and drive. Such a divine thing - wrapping itself around your palate and asking you to have another taste and savour the beauty of the old vine chardonnay harvested and made in this special way. The energy of this wine makes it such a wine to put away for at least 10 years before enjoying. Quite remarkable

    We have observed that Moon Opposite Saturn Harvest (MOSH) gives us wines which are vibrant, mineral and full of life, so we harvested separately on this day, which was a flower day harvest and whole bunch pressed to barrel where the wines went through natural fermentation.

    Harvested on a Fruit Day, whole bunch pressed and aged in Biodnamic Fruit Barrels giving full fruit flavour and character.  The wines have not been fined or filtered and were bottles straight from barrel.

  • 2014 Kevin John Legacy Series Flower Barrel Chardonnay

    Whole bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeast in Flower Day Barrels. The oak was harvested and coopered on a Flower Day according to the biodynamic calendar. We find this gives the wine a more minerality and line.
